Interlude: The Canon Reckoning
How many times was Lillia going to start a chapter by falling? The less foruth wall shattering version of this question ran through her head as she plummeted through the infinite dark into a space between spaces. The little blank space between the end of a chapter and the ânext chapterâ button on Royal Road.
A place of non-canon actions. A place of interludes. A place of authorâs notes.
A place that we know nobody reads. Itâs okay. The author probably forgives you if youâve made it this far into the story. Assuredly someone has hit the follow button andâ
âHello!?â Lillia asked the nothing from nowhere. To avoid the paradox, letâs give her a floor and call it a space.
As the floor popped in below her, Lillia yelped. After spending so much time in the land between, she was more used to stanidng on nothing than the narrator had expected.
âWhatâs going on? Did I win? Whoââ
âHey, Lillia,â the voice said. The voice wasnât one sheâd heard before, but somehow it was still familiar. A little shrill for a manâs voice, but what can you do? âSorry, just had to grab you there. Bad time?â
âProbably?â Lillia said. âHas there been a good time?â
âWell, we could have delayed this until after the whole debacle with Nennia, which probably would have helped the narrative flow.â
âThe what now?â
âDonât worry about it too much,â the voice said. âThatâs my job. Usually itâs my job to keep you out of here as well, but wellâhere we are?â
âWhere is here?â
âFourth wall. Narrative management section. Second book, around chapter 16.â
ââŚWhat?â
âLook, Lillia. Just give me a moment to explain things andââ
âIâm really tired of hearing that.â
âI know, but just allow me a moment and I will be able to help you withâHere Iâll take the blood off you.â
Lillia was clean.
âWhat the heck?â
Lillia felt warm and cozy.
She sat down on the floor and pulled her knees in close to her chest. âHave you always been able to do this?â
âTechnically yes.â
âIâVE BEENââ
âNarrative wise? No.â
âI donât know what that means still,â Lillia said. âBut you made my fingers warm for the first time in over a month without them needing to be on fire, so Iâll listen.â
âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome. Though itâs supposed to be, âThank you, your hiââ
âLillia, this is not the space to be pulling rank.â
There was something about the words that made her trust them, even if only because it could be written directly into the narration, which was kinda fucked up if you thought about it too long.
ââŚGo ahead.â
âOkay! So great news, Lillia. There are a bunch of people who really like you.â
âThere are! That whole âI donât remember peopleâ thing was getting bleak. Are they coming to heââ
âWell no, they arenât coming to help. Theyâreââ
âThen what good are they?â
âThe readers? Consider them emotional support,â the voice began. âBut look, a lot of people like you. Part of that is that other people started wondering how to market you andââ
âMarket me?â
âLook, itâs a long tale here. Point being there is this place called Achilles Literary Agency, they have the story in the hands of some other people and that process required someâŚchanges.â
âChanges?â
âNothing too major!â
âChanges to what?â
âChanges to whatâs happened so far in the story. There is a reason that your conversation with Eisel in the Realms Between changed in June.â
âWhat? No it didnât.â
âWell, no it didnât to you, but youâre canon Lillia.â
âWhat now?â
âCanon Lillia. The current version of you. If something changed earlier in the narrative you wouldnât know it because it would just be true.â
âYou sound like Cathria when she tried telling me about time travel.â
âCathria does come dangerously close to the fourth wall sometimes. Yes,â the voice said, admitting that theyâd sometimes gotten too cute about it. âBut the point is, if youâll give me a momentââ
âOkay.â
âThank you. The point is thatââ
âThank you yourâŚ.â
âHighness. Jesusââ
âWhoâs that?â
âI thought this would be a cute narrative device to explain a change in canon but Iâm thinking Havoc was right about you.â
âDepending on the time thatâs either very mean or very kind.â
âOkay. Lillia. Focus. Please. Youâre cozy.â
âI am.â
âOkay. So there is interest in the book, which is great, but some people up top think that your story was getting a little long in the tooth. You know, spending too much time down here in theââ
âThey think Iâm spending too much time down here?â
âWell, spending too long to explain the same amount of time,â the voice corrected. âLook, the point is that we had to cut about 10% of your narrative out of the story, which means that some things that happenedâŚdidnât happen.â
âWhat?â
âWell, for the most part happened differently. Fight with Cathria is way shorter now. Removed a whole phase. And the stairs!â
âBut I remember that fight.â
âYes! You will, itâs still there. Youâll just remember it differently to all the people on royal road and reddit.â
âSo is it just the fight with Cathria?â
âOh no. Lots removed around the original Hunting Grounds, kinda forgot this was a comedy for a moment thereââ
âTHIS IS A COMEDY?!â
âThat and a couple of items have changed or just been removed entirely.â
âYou stole my stuff!?â
âWell, not anything relevant! Remember the piece of cloth you got from the fight with Cathria that could be used for adaptive regalia?â
âNo?â
âNeither did I for like the entire first novel! So itâs gone. I had it written, and it just never came up!â
âBut it could be usefulââ
âLook, Lillia. Having the Rickshaw coin be narratively relevant was already pushing it with how little itâs mentioned. I had to actually ADD words to set that up better, which, of course, meant more removed and so on so forth.â
âSo you took all my stuff?â
âNo. I took some of your stuff, and itâs all stuff that you werenât using anyway. Clutter. Just space in the inventory.â
âI know all my items!â
âWhat does the Bastion Breaker do?â
âUhhhhh,â Lillia bit her lip as she thought.
âYeah exactly. Non-canon, donât worry about it.â
âSo,â Lillia began. âCanon mean true?â
âEssentially itâs the current truth. Yes.â
âSo if itâs not true, why tell me? Why not just stop talking about it andââ
âWell, I could have done that too, but there are some changes that do matterââ
âI knew it! You scoundrelââ
âNothing major! Small conversations that never happened, that sort of thing.â That didnât quite ring as true so they repeated it. âLook, I promise itâs nothing story-breaking. Most people probably donât even remember the parts that have been removed.â
âMost people? Itâs just me down here.â
âNo, like the readers. Remember all the people supporting you. You want to what? Donât worry, itâs fine.â
Lillia wasnât sure it was.
âPoint being, I probably didnât have to do this. People probably would have never noticed if I just went forward with theââ
âYou keep saying âI.â Are you in charge?â
âIn a sense, yes. Look, point being, weâre now going to move forward as if you were part of the edited novel canon, because otherwise this is driving me insane and really slowing down my writing andââ
âAre you the dungeon?â
âNo.â
âWho is the dungeon?â
âSpoilers.â
âOkay, just to make sure I understand,â Lillia began. âThere are some things and conversations missing, but you donât think I was acting on them anyway, so they shouldnât matter?â
âBingo.â
âAm I going to remember them?â
âNo. They will no longer be canon.â
âButâIs this conversation canon? It feels kindaâŚmeta.â
âWhereâd you learn the word meta?â
âExactly,â Lillia said. âSee. Meta? Weâre tooââ
âLook, this conversation isnât canon, but the effects of the conversation affect the canon.â
âThat doesnât make much sense.â
âYeah, and this was supposed to be a cute little announcement, but look where this conversation got us,â the voice said.
âWell I donât think that is my faâCouldnât this have been an authorâs note?â
âOh god we are too far gone.â
âWhich God?â
âDonât act like there is a canon name for the gods of this world. Be glad I named the nearby vassal kingdoms.â
âWell, my point stands. Couldnât this have been an authorâs note?â
âNobody reads authorâs notes.â
âWellââ
âHave fun with Nennia.â
Lillia stood up and dusted herself off before searching around for the source of the voice, namely to give it a quizzical look. âI wonât?â
Everything vanished.
